War in Ukraine. What is the Spirit of Anchorage?

Last week, global politics resembled a patchwork quilt – everyone was looking for cover and warmth under the scraps. Not everyone found it.

_______________

The latest Russia-US-Ukraine peace talks summit brought no news. Тhe next round won`t either. This has nothing to do with Zelensky, who is sabotaging the negotiations in every way. There will be no progress, as long as the spirit of Anchorage hovers over the negotiating table.

The territorial dispute is in a constitutional impasse. In accordance with the Spirit of Anchorage, either one of the parties, must unconditionally capitulate, or, guided by common sense, reconsider its position on the self-proclaimed LPR and DPR, and the status of Crimea. The trick of the second "either" allows one of the parties to de facto admit its mistake and de jure avoid unconditional capitulation. Of course, there will be physical and political consequences, and not all signatories to the terms will survive to see the peace treaty, but overall, the shame of military defeat can be avoided.

There`s also a third option: an international Arbitration Court. Not a tribunal initiated by the Council of Europe and chaired by Social Democrat Alain Berset, but an arbitration court. Berset, who accepted the Ukrainian 1st Class Order of Merit, from Zelensky, has no moral or ethical right to intervene in the dispute between Russia and Ukraine. Let the arbitrator hear the arguments of the parties, evaluate the evidence, and act fairly in the interests of both sides. With such a decision in hand, one can sit down at the peace negotiating table with a clear conscience.

I understand, and this is my speculation, that the spirit of Anchorage is stronger than the idea of an authoritative Arbitration Court. Und Doch…

Without forcing anyone to listen, I`ll express my own opinion: it`s extremely awkward when the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Defence expresses not so much controversial opinions or persists in ignorance, but when she oversteps the bounds of diplomacy. From the latest:

"The most important point on Kallas`s list is the demand that Russia withdraw its troops from Ukraine, Belarus, Transnistria (Moldova), Georgia, and Armenia. Furthermore, the nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus must be withdrawn. <…> The document notes that if peace terms oblige Ukraine to reduce its army, a similar demand must be made of Russia."

Previously, she demanded concessions from Russia in the form of military budget restrictions, army reductions, and nuclear weapons reductions in exchange for "holding them accountable for the crimes they have committed." You won`t find a useful idiot in Russia who, if in power, would accept these demands and voluntarily submit to Alain Berset`s tribunal. If there`s no mechanism for turning wishes into reality, why such sweeping statements?

In global politics, fantasies (wish lists) are dangerous because they create the illusion of reality. We`ve heard repeatedly, including from the High Representative, that "Russia must pay". But is there a mechanism for enforcement stemming from this obligation, other than increasing sanctions packages? Speaking about financial aid to Ukraine, the representative frankly admitted that the aid isn`t backed by a specific mechanism for funding it:

"Russia will never voluntarily compensate for the damage it has caused."

If there`s no enforcement mechanism, then why bother? Why pick the pockets of our compatriots? Why burden someone else`s descendants with debt? Why?

The day is drawing ever closer when Russia will reach its new borders. The question is whether Russia will stop at the borders or begin the further liberation of Ukraine. Meanwhile, this would require, figuratively speaking, replacing the invading army with an occupying one, which would entail a completely different size and expense. Obviously, the methods and speed of military operations would change dramatically: it`s one thing to fight on territory you consider your own, and quite another on enemy territory.

The disloyal population, under threat of lustration (denazification), will rapidly flee to Europe. And we know exactly how this phase of the invasion of Ukraine will begin: with the immediate cessation of European tourism to Kyiv. Has it ever occurred to you that in more than three years of war, not a single one of those seeking a military-political biography has suffered – not a single European official or politician has died or even been wounded during "unannounced visits." None of them felt fear on Ukrainian soil. There can only be one explanation: all the tourist trips took place under Russian control. Their guardian angel was the bloodthirsty Pu.

I believe that the experts who have been describing Russia`s weakness and its economic difficulties under 19 sanctions packages will be extremely embarrassed when real denazification begins.

_______________

Pu needs peace, but not on the battlefield, but at the negotiating table, while there`s still something to negotiate. In this sense, he`s no less a peacemaker than Donald Trump. In a sense, constitutional borders are a for Pu place of death. In Chinese military art, it`s the place where the army`s military and moral strength are at their peak. Either victory or death. I believe Pu isn`t interested in tempting fate any further. What he`s already accomplished will be enough for him.

This isn`t the Kremlin`s narrative, but my personal speculation.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz`s statement in Stuttgart:

"We do not accept this new world order as a predetermined destiny. We can shape it. We extend our hand for a renewed partnership with the United States. At the same time, we understand that in the future, we too must take our destiny into our own hands. This is what we want, and this is what we are capable of doing".

The all-knowing Wikipedia believes that the "New World Order" (Latin: Novus ordo mundi) has no generally accepted meaning, and the term itself is mistakenly associated with an incorrect translation of the Latin motto "Novus ordo seclorum" (order of a new century, new era, new epoch) from the Great Seal of the United States. The same online know-it-all asserts that the "New Order" (German: Neuordnung) is the political system that the Nazi regime sought to establish in Europe and the territories it occupied. Neuordnung was publicly introduced in 1941 by Adolf Hitler in a speech at the Berlin Sports Palace:

"I am convinced that 1941 will be a historic year for the Great Reconstruction of Europe!"

Merz says that Germans do not accept the new world order as a predetermined destiny, because they themselves are its direct creators. It is probably no coincidence that his rival, French President Macron, pronounces the Chancellor`s name "Merz" so indistinctly that the French "merde" is heard in it.

___________

Pray for peace, not for Merz`s New World Order.
